‘TWO BALLS AND A HEARTBEAT - LIFE AND TIMES OF A WORKING MUSICIAN’

Among Savages is the orchestral, sometimes experimental, captivating pop music of mastermind Peter Barbee. His latest album Account of Friends and Foe came out recently and can be streamed below.

‘Two Balls and a Heartbeat – Life and Times of a Working Musician’

I’m pretty sure that’s what I would title my memoir… if I magically turned into an artist worthy of a memoir. I was throwing some other options around, but none of them quite seemed to echo the spirit of a small town kid from East Tennessee living in the big city with little more than a shit-eating grin. So I’ll leave it at that for the time being.

The green hills of my hometown brought me my great love. My formative years were filled with mentors who lead me to music and taught me to analyze and, eventually, invoke its emotional powers. Without many other distractions, I poured myself into its craftsmanship, teleporting and time traveling whenever I wanted. In my obsession, I found my ticket out of town.

Many years later, here I sit- in 100 degree, sunny California- in the basement studio I renovated last year so that I could finally, really CREATE. My sanctuary. Where the bad vibes stay the fuck out and I can chase down songs like a lion to its prey.

With every passing song and every passing year, I’m beginning to suspect more and more that my grandfather didn’t buy me my first guitar as a way out of my experience. Rather, he gave me the gift of music as a way IN. I’m still trying every day to honor that reality.

I’ve been at this for nearly 21 years. I’m almost 31. I have so little to show for it (in a traditional sense) that a stranger might mistake me for a bum. But, man, when the lights get low and I’m playing for my own heart and soul, a stranger might also mistake me for a prophet.

I’m not one to try to talk anyone in or out of pursuing a life of music. Hell, I don’t even like explaining why I do what I do. Highs and lows, it’s about living a life in which- at any moment -you can change your cards, and the only score to settle is your own pursuit of greatness. I still don’t know much, but I know that that pursuit takes balls. Balls…and a heartbeat.
