15. La Guerre – “Everything”

from Sapphires

I’ve always been a Cowboy Indian Bear fan and discovering how awesome La Guerre (Katlyn Conroy; Ex Cowboy Indian Bear) is has made the band’s 2014 break up just a little easier on my heart. After listening to Sapphires, I found myself coming back to “Everything” time and time again.

14. The Weeknd – “Can’t Feel My Face”

from Beauty Behind the Madness

Although I tend to avoid top 40s music at all costs, I can’t help but feel extraordinarily happy when this song graces my ears. “Can’t Feel My Face” has managed to burrow its way into my brain which normally would drive me crazy, but I love it.

13. Shilpa Ray – “Burning Bride”

from Last Year’s Savage

Ray sounds like gypsy Stevie Nicks in a pile of falling leaves. Need I say more?

12. Incubus – “Make Out Party”

from Trust Fall (Side A)

I was a bit surprised to see Incubus put out an EP after being quiet for several years now. “Can we make out?” You have my attention. “Make Out Party” is awesome in a very straightforward, very Incubus kind of way.

11. Turnover – “Cutting My Fingers Off”

from Peripheral Vision

It’s like the best of post-rock and emo-pop all wrapped up into one song. Plus that “Losing you is like cutting my fingers off” line is a total win.

10. Nyves – “Just Give Up”

from Anxiety

Remember Demon Hunter? Yeah, this is Ryan Clark’s new band (with Randy Torres from Project 86). I have no idea what I thought their album Anxiety would sound like but I certainly wasn’t expecting these super cool New Wave jams. Ryan’s Depeche Mode / Nine Inch Nails / Portishead influences are definitely realized on the record and I’ve totally been enjoying the 80s vibe of “Just Give Up”.

09. Moving Mountains – “Deathless”

from Moving Mountains / Prawn

The first time I heard this song, the thunderous instrumental intro immediately took me back to the 90s. I knew right away this song would make an appearance on my year end list.

08. The Mispers – “Brother”

from Weekend

This song is what would happen if Murder by Death recorded a track with Conner Oberst on Vocals. Groovy and danceable with charging strings and shaky vocals, this track is absolutely brilliant.

07. Drug Church – “Zero Zero”

from Swell

Every once in a while a song hits you at just the right time. For me it was driving through Nebraska in the dark on highway 80 after a really bad day. I had the No Sleep Records sampler spinning in my cd player (yes, I actually listen to those) when this glorious song hit me like a smack in the face. “I care an unhealthy amount about the things I can’t at all help” couldn’t have been more true for me in that moment. This song quickly became my road warrior anthem and has been shouted in my car many a bad day since.

06. Modern Baseball – “The Thrash Particle”

from MOBO Presents: The Perfect Cast EP featuring Modern Baseball

The Perfect Cast EP was a total surprise from Modern Baseball and I couldn’t help from jumping on the couch while belting out the words (a very Cameron Diaz moment). I imagine that when Brendan Lukens sings ”…I wrote this song about you” he must be speaking to me. All 6 songs are excellent but I find myself playing Thrash Particle on repeat. Yes, yes this IS “the hook (I) wanted”.

05. Daughter – “Doing the Right Thing”

from the upcoming album Not To Disappear

I first heard this song when I saw Daughter live at the Greek Theater in Berkley, California. The entire crowd was rendered speechless and taken on a journey guided by Elena Tonra’s voice. It’s great to have music from a band I love so dearly that is new but still has that classic Daughter vibe.

04. My Morning Jacket – “Like a River”

from The Waterfall

I tried to make a rule that I wouldn’t include any songs on this list from albums on my “Top Albums of 2015” list but this song was too big a part of my 2015 to leave off. It’s totally 70s and the guitar picking is absolutely beautiful. I even had my dad (an old school singer-songwriter lover and all around fantastic musician) listen to this one. Jim James’ voice is magical and the ambiance of this song goes to show the timelessness of “Like a River” and Waterfall as a whole.

03. Foxing – “Night Channels”

from Dealer

I’m a sucker for a sappy piano tune. Night Channels is one of those songs you cry to for no reason while you sip on hot tea in a pair of fuzzy knee-high socks. I love the progression of the song and the passion in Connor Murphy’s voice.

02. Whale Bones – “Exhausted Forgiveness”

from The Seaside EP

It’s no secret I’ve developed a borderline creepy obsession with Whale Bones in the past couple months. Another exception to my “Favorite Songs” vs “Top albums” rule (But since I’m writing the article, I reserve the right to change the rules as desired). My love for this band could never be summarized in a few sentences but you can read all about my feelings for the duo in the Spotlight Article I wrote here.

01. Awolnation – “Run”

from Run

Call me over enthused but this song may be the best thing I’ve ever heard. Every person who gets in my car is likely to experience an Awol-ambush and I can’t keep myself from dancing after that epic drop (and I mean it – I just caught myself unknowingly grooving with my earbuds in at a Starbucks). I can’t get enough of the dark creepy feeling on this track and can only hope it’s a foreshadowing of Awolnation’s future releases.
