If you live in the Midwest, it’s no secret that June is HOT. Although temperatures in Kansas City reached over 100 degrees with about a thousand percent humidity – multitudes of beer, music, and food lovers (including the Playlistplay crew!) braved the heat and descended upon the West Bottoms of Kansas City. Boulevardia proves year after year to be an event like no other, celebrating our great city. Here are a couple of reasons why we too headed to the fantastical city of beer to celebrate.

Beer

Boulevardia not only celebrates the city’s hero brew, but taps from others as well including Duvel, Schlafly, Sierra Nevada, O’dell and many more! Boulevardians sampled more than 45 breweries from all over the world during the Taps and Tastes event on Saturday.

Food Trucks

The first year we attended Boulevardia, I think I may have squealed when I saw the glorious row of food trucks waiting to feed me some of KC’s best cuisine. We made sure to come hungry this year and fell in love with the food and the people from Fine Thyme Food, an innovative food truck specializing in crepes. Nick ordered a pulled pork crepe served with blueberry BBQ sauce and I scarfed down the Good Vibrations with quinoa and lemon poppy seed dressing.

Maker’s Market

We took a break from the hot sun to meet some of our city’s coolest innovators and makers of great things. We picked up some festival swag as well as some unique, locally made goods from Ocean and Sea and Messner Family Farm.

Cooling off with some treats from @beesweeticecream at @blvdia yesterday. Life is good and ice cream is better!

Ice Cream

We couldn’t resist Lemon Gogi Berry Push Pops to keep us cool during Soul Asylum’s mid-day set. Everything they make is gluten free and organic, made with coconut milk and local dairy so we didn’t have to worry about a food coma after our snack attack.

Support Local Stores

You may not think of doing your summer shopping at a music festival but the air conditioned vintage shops in the West Bottoms provide an escape from the heat and an opportunity to shop local. Most shops are only open one weekend per month so we did some serious shopping in between bands.

Lemonade

Fresh squeezed lemonade and limeade with $3 refills. Need I say more?!

Jams

Of course the main reason we love this festival is the lineup. Boulevardia does an excellent job of curating bands people already love (Andrew McMahnon, Nate Reuss, and Gin Blossoms to name a few) and stellar local acts to discover. Pink Royal stole the show for us this year with their danceable tunes and we couldn’t even be mad that we were sweaty.
