I’ve seen Josh Garrett – stage named Grey Eyes – perform countless times live. Garrett’s uncanny ability to make a room stop dead in its tracks and listen never ceases to amaze me. Perhaps it’s the heart-on-your-sleeve approach to his performance, or the sheer emotional weight of the subject matter. Whatever it may be, Grey Eyes is a force of emo power in Kansas City.

In the many times I’ve caught Garrett live, I’ve got to see, and hear, these six tracks that make Cascade come to life. From just days after he wrote the songs to how they are portrayed on the album, the amount of growth, heart, and soul in each track is palpable.

Cascade is comprised of 6 acoustic tracks (psst, there’s a bonus track in there, do. not. miss. it.), each of which carry with it a huge emotional charge. From feelings of not belonging in your community, to not belonging on this earth, to feeling less than whole, and struggling to keep up with life around you. As bleak as it may be, Garrett certainly instills a glimmer of hope into each track. Being an advocate of mental health, Grey Eyes is a project that speaks to soothe one’s insecurities and anxieties.

Grab your emo pals, kick up a campfire, and digest this piece of art. Cascade is a catharsis.

Grey Eyes will be celebrating the release of Cascade tomorrow (June 2nd) night at the Rino with What A Wreck.
