Best Newcomers: Brother

We were thoroughly impressed with this group of KC area minors who just formed in June of 2015.

Best Local Act: The Philistines

A little vintage, a little gypsy, a little psychedelic. We are counting down the days until their debut album, coming this summer from The Record Machine.

Band we immediately wanted to see again: Fake Drugs

Which is a badass band that includes Keil Corcoran from STRFKR.

Breath of Fresh Air: All Get Out

An awesome change of pace and easily one of the best shows of the festival.

Sweatiest Set: STRFKR

It was about a thousand degrees in the brand new location for Record Bar and I’m pretty sure it was from all the bodies moving.

Artist to Keep an Eye On: Connor Leimer

Playlistplay Liner Note alum and KC homegrown local currently working with Amos Lee in Nashville.

Most Badass Frontwoman: La Sera

Former Vivian Girls member Katy Goodman kicked all the ass with her quasi “rockabindie” (rockabilly + indie?) vocals and long legs. Their new material had a bit of an extra punch live.

Best Cover: Tall Tales – Two Door Cinema Club

Best Singalongs: Manchester Orchestra bonus: 50 cent

These guys brought a heavier, more rock-focused vibe to the festival and managed to get everyone banging their heads and throwing some fists into the air.

Sav’s Favorite: Peelander Z

Perhaps I’m biased because I got to “play bass” for them (with Nate Allen on the guitar, nonetheless!) but this is a band you must see before you die. Known for their stage antics and colorful personalities (see what I did there?) Peelander Z live is truly like nothing you’ve ever seen before. To experience a bit of the chaos, keep an eye out for their film (my new favorite documentary) Mad Tiger, coming this summer.

Nick’s Favorite: San Fermin

I knew how beautiful and big the band’s sound was but I didn’t expect to see how intricate and well composed it was live. With band members running around stage and switching out instruments with others, all while putting on a spectacularly crafted show, San Fermin easily put on one of the most impressive and the most memorable set of the festival.
