Sand, ocean, good food, great friends, fantastic bands. We got to cruise on down to the beautiful Gulf Shores and listen to some fantastic performances on the beach at the Hangout Music Festival. Check out our favorite moments from the 3 day festival below and hey, maybe next year you can come down and join us.

Most Soul – Alabama Shakes

Brittany Howard and company brought their big ol’ blues-rock sound to their home turf and blew the beach away with their performance, which consisted of the band members smiling as often as humanly possible.

Best Cover – Kaleo

This 4 piece band may be Icelandic, but there wasn’t a band at the festival who gave more of a sense of Americana folk beauty. I needed help picking my jaw up off the ground when JJ Julius Son’s beautiful voice romanced us with a cover of Bang Bang – My Baby Shot Me Down (written by Sonny Bono and famously covered my Nancy Sinatra).

Sav’s Favorite – X Ambassadors

As one of the bands we were most excited to see at the festival, X Ambassadors did not disappoint. Complete with flawless vocals, demanding stage presence and inflatable alligators, their set is one we will never forget.

Best Summer Band – Coasts.

With lyrics like “We fell in love right by the ocean” and “We’re dancing like we’re dumb under summer stars” it’s clear that they were not only the perfect band for this festival, but also the perfect soundtrack for summer.

Show Stealer – Run The Jewels

With sick beats, witty stage banter, and hilarious dance moves, Run the Jewels provided one of the most enjoyable sets of the festival. I think the crowd would agree that they easily upstaged fellow hip hop artist Fetty Wap, who played right after.

Nick’s Favorite – Panic! At the Disco

When festival headliner Calvin Harris dropped from the bill due to a car accident, Panic! stepped up to be the headlining hero. Everyone flocked to their set and danced it out to Panic!’s new and old tunes plus their covers of Queen and Journey, which showed off the fact that Brandon Urie can do absolutely anything.

Best Hair – Kurt Vile

b’lieve i’m goin down was arguably one of Vile’s best works to date (and definitely one of my top albums of 2015). What you can’t hear on the record, though, is the beautiful hair behind the music. For real – we’re having some serious hair envy over here.
