Music has been a constant in my life, always by my side, there with me for all the ups and downs. I feel the right song at the right time can change the course of someones life, musician or not. There are times when I’m down and I hear music and it’s like a gear is shifting in my brain, like I’m being pulled into another reality, a parallel universe of sound and heightened mood that I was previously oblivious to.
Some of my earliest memories are of building drum sets out of pots and pans, once or twice trying to string rubber bands on coat hangers to make a harp or guitar. My father has told me that he played me a lot of Electric Ladyland on the car stereo as he would take me to daycare in the mornings, while I don’t remember this, when I rediscovered Hendrix in my teens it was kind of like a bomb went off reigniting a bunch of dormant neural pathways wired for The Experience.
More recently I was able to tour for a short time with Black Joe Lewis as backing guitarist. I had been ill for several months and was still sick when I left for the tour but I didn’t want to pass on the opportunity. About halfway through the tour we played a sold out show at the Casbah in San Francisco, just a Tuesday for most of the dudes in the band, but an awesome experience for me. The next day some of us went down to Ocean Beach, the weather was perfect and I remember just sitting on the beach and watching the ocean, taking it all in, forgetting about being sick and feeling truly good for the first time in a long while.
Music can change your life and take you cool places, dig it!
