Hangout, oh Hangout. The Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores Alabama is arguably one of the most unique festivals in the States; it takes over the warm, sandy beaches of the south and brings varied artists from huge indie acts to hip hop all-stars to some of the biggest DJs in the world, and this year was no exception. The entire weekend showed us that, rain or shine, Hangout offers an atmosphere unlike any other. This is how we spent our Saturday on the beach.

10:00am Woke Up On the Beach

There’s something pretty amazing about waking up on a beach. That something special? Is waking up on a beach.

11:43am Ate At The Hangout, Listened To Fletcher

After scooting out of our hotel and getting on the super comfortable shuttle bus, we set foot on the beach to kick off our Saturday. And what’s a better way to start a full day of running around than stuffing our bellies full of delicious seafood at The Hangout restaurant, the namesake of the music festival and the host to the Mermaid stage.

One of the other rad things about eating at The Hangout is that you have views of the entire beach, some of the stages, and they even livestream some of the performances to the TVs in the building. We were able to grab some food and hear the soft and beautiful sounds of Fletcher while grabbing some lunch.

12:30pm Joshua James

The first set of the day for us was alt-country / folk singer Joshua James. Powering through the heat of the Alabama sun, James and his band left the crowed swooning over his snarly voice and powerful presence.

1:00pm Mondo Cozmo + Frozen Drinks

Frozen drinks and an incredible set from humble rebel rockers Mondo Cozmo? Yes please. Mondo Cozmo had the first sing-along set of the day with their track “Shine,” which had the audience singing the line “Let ‘em get high, let ‘em get stoned” in unison at full force.

1:30pm Mutemath

Mutemath brought their entrancing and intricate math-rock to the beach, along with a special little guest. The little lady ran out to sing a duet with singer / dad Paul Meany and then ran off singing “Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots, who Mutemath shared a stage with later that night.

2:15pm Arcade Hangs

We decided to duck out of the summer sun and catch some AC and drinks in the Arcade, which housed some awesome retro games.

3:00pm Listened To Local Natives While Smooching Puppies

If only all festivals had dogs to kiss–for a good cause nonetheless. We made a donation and hopped in line to love on some little pups while listening to Local Natives’ set across the beach.

3:23pm Snacks

Food. So. Much. Food. Hangout had numerous food trucks and other vendors set up around the festival, providing food from all cultures to satisfy all cravings. It made it very hard to pass up the delicious smells.

3:30pm Playstation Truck

We were curious about the Playstation truck so we popped in to find an oasis of video games. There were tons of screens for friends to pair up and play or set out on a solo adventure. There was even a Playstation VR headset set up for festival attendants to try out.

4:00pm Susto

We caught alt-country / indie rock group Susto’s first set of the festival (they played again on Sunday) directly in front of the water. To the crowd’s surprise, and something that could only happen at a festival, the band brought out Jonathan from The Head And The Heart to perform a song with them.

5:00pm Tory Lanez

One of the most hype sets of the festival, Lanez started with a simple DJ set and quickly erupted to jumping around the stage and even surfing on the crowd–while standing.

5:45pm LP

One of the biggest crowds we saw at the Mermaid stage, New York native LP had a packed house for her awe-inspiringly powerful vocals.

6:15pm Cobi

Cobi had the ladies swooning when he took off his shirt mid-set but he had everyone fixated on his incredible vocals and technically impressive guitar playing. His Hozier-esque vocals brought the crowd to an intimate mindset that felt miles away from the crowded beach.

7:45pm Major Lazer

Holy. Shit. Major Later brought out all the guns for their early evening party as the sun set. The electronic super group, founded by Diplo, had dancers, explosions, an awesome light show, and custom graphics that played behind the band.

9:00pm Twenty One Pilots

Saturday night’s headliners did not disappoint. Threatened with rain and a massive impending storm, the boys played a set meant for a crowd of tens of thousands before having to cut the music short to allow fans to leave the festival grounds before the storm.

9:30pm Sigur Rós

Sigur Rós calmed us down with enough energy to get us pumped for closing out the festival on Sunday. There couldn’t be a more gorgeous atmosphere to help end the second day of Hangout 2017.
