Live Review + Gallery: King Princess (Danforth Music Hall / Toronto, ON)

Hailing from the artistic and indie vibes that encapsulate the Brooklyn streets, Mikaela Straus, better known by her stage name King Princess, is quite the interesting music phenom; not to mention she’s only 20 years old! Having shot up seemingly out of nowhere in 2018 – to commercial and critical fame – Straus has succeeded in selling out her “Pussy is God Tour” throughout North America with only a handful of singles and an EP to her name.

Performing to a sold-out crowd last night in Toronto on only her third show of her tour, Straus’s set was very well-done and showed just how much talent the young pop artist has to offer. Opening with a new and unreleased track titled “Useless Phrases”, Straus had just as much charm and wit as what she seems to present in the public light. Her soulful voice really enveloped a sort of dreamy atmosphere throughout the concert hall, which reminded me heavily of the aesthetic for her “Pussy is God Tour”. From there, Straus went into “Cheap Queen” (a personal favorite of mine) and “Best Friend” which seemed to really hype the crowd up even more.

After observing many of the adoring faces looking up at her, I could immediately tell why so many consistency rally around Straus and the music she crafts. Much of Straus’s work speaks about empowerment and equality for not only women, but for all groups who have ever felt criticism and/or judgement for being themselves. This is no better exemplified in her latest single, “Pussy is God”. A song that definitely sets the mood right for a little spice, a feeling which was magnified tenfold during Straus’s live rendition of the track, “Pussy is God” is unapologetically sexual and straight to the point. This definitely pushes the old saying that “Pussy is Power” or in this sense, “Pussy is God”. By the time Straus had wrapped up her set and had said goodnight to the Toronto crowd of nearly 1,500, there was no doubt in my mind as to why King Princess has found such success in little under a year.
