A Mouth May Grow really sees red steppes coming into their own; for a debut release, we know exactly what red steppes is all about.

The album oozes shimmering twang and intricate melodies. The project from singer-songwriter Nika States elicits a lot of personal emotion out of listeners. Her unique lyrical style – gorgeously poetic – is rife with metaphor and symbolism. It is clear that each track on A Mouth May Grow hold special meaning to States, many of which detail the physical appearance of people or specific places.

And though these tracks are deeply personal for States, the listener isn’t an outsider. Instead, the listener is invited into the world of A Mouth May Grow to make of it what they will. Hidden in each track is a symphony of subtlety; little bells can be barely heard, droning keys forming foundations for tracks, listen with good headphones.
