Surprises are wonderful. Not the kind of surprise where a creepy little toy launches its head out of a box, no; specifically the kind of surprise where, say, a band that has been putting out consistently genre-challenging music for the past 15 years decides to drop a doozy of an album on it’s mass following as a free stream—and does so without anyone previously knowing that album even exists.

At the magical stroke of midnight this past Wednesday, Say Anything front-man and ring-leader Max Bemis posted a full stream of the band’s newest musical endeavor, I Don’t Think It Is. The follow-up to 2014’s HebrewsI Don’t Think It Is was a bit of a different experience for Bemis & band in creating the music. For starts, Bemis didn’t feel like going through the same motions in announcing and marketing the album; he felt more compelled to just get it out there and see what the fans thought.

“My team and I decided to forego the dying art of the lead‐up and share our new record “I Don’t Think It Is” with you, right now, with no warning. Why? Obvious. I want to be like Bey. Not‐really‐kidding aside, I’ve become a bit weary of doing the same song and dance leading up to the actual endgame, people actually listening to something. It also seems to fit with the core of this record: me destroying any notion of feeling blasé about music.”

It’s also a different way of making music for Bemis. For the new record, he teamed up with his friend and music-crush Darren King, the drummer of Mutemath, to collaborate on the album with. King isn’t the only collaborative team member, Bemis also worked with Cody Votolato from the Blood Brothers and Paul Hinojos from At The Drive‐In in addition to Christian (the Hotelier), Michelle (Little Big League) and Zack (Backwards Dancer) as well as others.

Read a full blurb from Bemis on the band’s website and stream the full album below. I Don’t Think It Is made it to digital stores this past Friday (Feb 5) and will be seeing  physical release on April 15th with various preorder bundles (including colored vinyl) available in the band’s store.
