“I’ve lived in Kansas City all my life, and I never thought I would be playing on a rooftop.”
It was a steamer. You know, warm, sunny, humid; the kind of sticky heat that shrouds Kansas City in the summer. I wouldn’t call it a hot day, I don’t think any native Kansas Citian would… we know it gets much, much hotter. We congregated on a rooftop of a bank, Lead Bank, in the heart of the Crossroads Arts District (think art, tech, and all the craft beer you could want). Tonight was another exceptional installment of Sofar Sounds Kansas City.
As the sun drifted ever so slowly towards the horizon, Seattle, rabble rockers Kuinka struck the first chord of the evening. The quartet were making their first proper Kansas City appearance, having only ever been in KC for Folk Alliance back in February. Pulling double duty, with a headlining gig at recordBar, Kuinka played more stripped back than usual, but no one complained. Everyone in awe of the bright set, Kuinka won over the crowd rather easily.
The sunlight now to it’s final moments, Momma’s Boy took the stage. The hometown honeys are known for their raucous, bombastic, garage rock sound, but tonight, they were a bit quieter. Showing their softer side, and proving themselves as masters of their craft, Momma’s Boy stunned the audience with smooth harmonies and peppy hooks. We all walked away from the night with “Want Me Back” stuck in our head.
Now completely infused in the nighttime sky, emcee Domineko stepped up. A vibe that Sofar Sounds Kansas City has seen rarely, Domineko delivered a set full of socio-political songs, touting the power of people and the oppression of some. Smooth but heavy, peppy but dark, Domineko has a message that people need to hear.
The night ended with thunderous applause. Patrons trickled out the door and a cool breeze rolled through. Another great, sold-out Sofar.
