The Dirty Heat have technically (insert air quotes) only been making music since 2012, but the band can trace it’s roots back to two of the founding members Andy Hamel (drums and vocals) and Phil Luna (lead vocals and guitar) swapping homemade lo-fi tunes in grade school. Since then, the band has gone on to record a six track album entitled The Invention of Flight as well as numerous singles, including their latest track “Empty Spaces.”

“Empty Spaces” kinda feels like it should be packaged with a car window that’s already rolled down for you. It’s a bouncy, melodic indie / alt rock song that has some jazzy-ish horns and seems like the song you play at the end of road trip when you’re nearing the last bit of the trip and are excited to reach your destination but sad to leave the road behind. It’s super well produced as well, which is no surprise since Chris “Frenchie” Smith (Toadies, And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, The Darkness, The Dandy Warhols) produced the track at the studio he co-owns, The Bubble Recording studio in Austin, Texas. “Empty Spaces” is currently set to accompany three other songs on a vinyl record released in April.

Be on the lookout for the band’s new EP, take a listen to their new song below, and be sure to check out their tour dates as they set out on their West Coast tour, which started this past Saturday at Tellers in Austin, Texas and continues Feb. 18 at Sky Bar in Tucson, Arizona.

For fans of: a less ska Reel Big Fish, a more poppy At The Drive In, …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead, good 90’s music
